Dr. Denise Foster, PhD, MSN, RN, CNE, has authored and administered an extensive number of educational experiences in a variety of undergraduate and graduate nursing programs. She has taught in all settings of the nursing curriculum, including classroom, hybrid, clinical, laboratory, and online. Her research interests include cannabis nursing concerns and the use of stress-reduction strategies in holistic practice. Dr. Foster has practiced as a clinician in medical-surgical care, critical care, cardiac care, and home health care settings. She has founded a cannabis nurse research and consultation practice in Virginia, where she works with and educates patients, families, health care practitioners, and communities about medicinal cannabis. She is currently writing the chapter, The Human Endocannabinoid System Physiology, for Wolters Kluwer Health publishers, which will be included in the first cannabis handbook for nurses, scheduled to be published in Spring 2020. She also developed and is teaching the nation’s first accredited academic course in a cannabis certificate program for RN to BSN students entitled, Endocannabinoid System and Pharmacology, at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. Dr. Foster currently serves as a Board of Director member and Secretary for the American Cannabis Nurses Association, where she chairs the Research and Education Committee and the Social Media and Communications Committee.
Nancy Nurge NP-BC, RN is a board-certified family nurse practitioner who received her NP degree through the University of Connecticut School of Nursing in Storrs. Ms. Nurge owns her own practice, certifying Connecticut residents for Medical Cannabis. She previously worked as a HouseCalls Nurse Practitioner following patients in their homes dealing with chronic illnesses. Through her frustration with the lack of effective pharmaceuticals in treating many of her elderly patients, Ms. Nurge became inspired and passionate with cannabis therapeutics. The largest growing segment in the cannabis market are seniors. She is using her knowledge to benefit elderly patients suffering from pain from arthritis, fibromyalgia, and many other debilitating diseases. Ms. Nurge worked with Connecticut Visiting Nurses as a Hospice Nurse Practitioner. Ms. Nurge’s mission is to educate one patient at a time, and to that end has presented community outreach educational programs across Connecticut entitled, “Let’s Start a Conversation about Medical Marijuana”. She has been featured in newspapers and most recently, on Nutmeg TV “What’s Your Story,” airing on Connecticut public access television. She has been a member of the ACNA since 2018, where she is a member of ACNA’s Research and Education Committee to help improve nurses’ knowledge of cannabis therapeutics and the endocannabinoid system.
The American Cannabis Nurses Association is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP17085 for 1 contact hour.
